So you want to watch more tv? Shows you MUST watch and when to watch them

Not to toot my own horn, but I am a TV connoisseur.

Actually, I don’t know if that’s a bad thing or not.

ANYHOW, I know tv, I know good shows, and today I’m here to share them with you because you know what? I need more people who watch the same things I do, because some crazy shit be going on and I need people to talk things out with! First, I’m going to tell you about the shows and why you should watch them, THEN I’m going to give you a nighttime guide for you to give these shows a try!

You ready? Ok, let’s go.

First are the television shows that are CLASSICS. And by classics I mean you may have already heard of them, they’ve been on air for a bit and they are constantly having new episodes produced. These are shows that you watch weekly when a new episode drops that’ll help keep you in a routine and glued to your tv waiting for that next episode fix.

  1. The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

Does it have to be Atlanta specifically? Yes. I remember watching this show since foreverrrrrrr. I remember being at Sunday dinners and my momma and aunts being glued to the tv and you know what? I was glued too! And still am! The show gives you the perfect mix of messiness, drama, personal growth, and luxury. After being exclusive to Atlanta for 10+ years, I am starting to branch out and watch Beverly Hills and Jersey (the OG). With all of the episodes that have previously aired, it’s taking me some time to get to the root of the latter 2, BUT I normally watch the older episodes of RHOB and RONJ during the day if I’m at home. And of course Sundays are for the new episodes.

  1. Married to Medicine.

Another Atlanta-type housewife show. BUT the ladies are doctorrrrrrrs. So of course the quiet luxury be going crazy, and honestly, the drama is TOP TIER. Every season is a 10/10 with no notes, again this one comes on air with new episodes every Sunday, usually after Housewives, but if this is your first time viewing this show is perfect during Sunday mornings/afternoons, you know as you’re cleaning up and preparing for the week ahead, just throw it on and start from Season 1. But I'm not responsible if you end up being in front of the tv the whole day instead!

  1. The Rookie.

I randomly came across this show when it only had 3 episodes and now we’re on season 8! I don’t even like cop shows, the Law and Order, Chicago PD, Hawaii 5-0 and more just creep me out. Like why would I want to see all of the different ways I could get kidnapped, killed, trafficked and more before every episode?

The Rookie is a police show, don’t get me wrong, but it’s LIGHT HEARTED, it’s bright, you can actually watch it when the sun is shining! The show is actually about Nolan, who’s an older “Rookie.” It follows him and 2 other Rookies throughout their days in LA on the police force. Some episodes they're investigating someone who's going around vandalizing memorials, the next they're stopping a terrorist, and the next one after that, they're preventing a diamond heist. New epsiodes come on every Tuesday, so it's a good mid-week refresh.

  1. Love After Lock Up.

No words. I’m literally gagged every week!! This is a reality show that focuses on people who are getting released from jail and their relationship with their significant other(s), which they usually meet through some pen pal type website, so once they’re released, they are finally experiencing the real world together for the first time. I forgot to mention that some may have gotten married while they were in prison and other couples don’t actually see each other until the significant other is released! This type of drama gives way less scripted, but that makes it even better, because you know that these people are dead ass serious and they really don’t see how crazy the shit is that they be doing.

  1. Abbott Elementary

Ok, if you do happen to be the 1.14% of those that have not watched Abbott Elementary yet, this is your sign to stop playing games. Abbott is a show that follows 5 elementary teachers around and 1 tone-deaf-but-iconic principal in the Philadelphia public school system. A lot of people compare the film style to one similar to “The Office,” but I’ve never watched The Office before, so that’s above me. It’s filled with real-life situations that come with being in an underfunded school district but it also has some dry humor, some laugh-out-loud moments, and some amazing guest appearances with your favorite celebrities, athletes and more. New episodes are every Wednesday, so it’s a great little ‘ki to get you through the week.

Now, it’s time for the shows that are usually Netflix/Hulu/HBO Originals but deserveeeeeeeeeeeeeeee the views because they are just that good! They haven’t been on that long, and it may not have many seasons (because no streaming platform understands that a show can go beyond 4 seasons)

  1. Hacks.

Bro. I’ve literally never seen a show like this one before. This HBO hit show follows this older and well established comedian who’s doing a residency in Las Vegas who teams up with a young witted writer to help her with new material. They end up creating this ICONIC duo, this show is hilarious, like literal tears in the corner of my eyes. It’s modern, the side characters are also amazing and the story line season after season leaves you wanting more, it’s not cringy trust me. The only thing I do not like is that I’m all caught up on the episodes. If there was a button to wipe my mind so that I could watch it again for the first time…. Trust me, I’m pressing the button.

  1. Not Suitable For Work

Honestly, anything by Mindy Kaling goes triple platinum in my house. It’s like she always come out with a show at the right time in my life that is about my situation, in a made up and exaggerated for TV kinda way. This latest HULU original is about 5 20-something’s who are neighbors and living (and working) in NYC. I love how the show is about the good and the bad, and the confusing and frustrating things that happen in your 20’s. It’s relatable because they all don’t have these outlandish jobs that leave those watching feeling as though they aren’t doing enough. It felt so realistic, and all 5 are in different stages of their careers which also plays a huge part. You have the recently graduated business major students, the premed turned actor, the intern with a famous father and the assistant to a celebrity stylish. Don’t get me wrong, this is still tv, but it’s lighthearted, funny, and overall a good time. Trust me, even though it’s 1 season that recently wrapped, this one is going to be on my watch list until it ends. This show is great to watch on a weekday night to get you in a funny, goofy mood, it’ll work to relax you from your day and also prepare you for the next day.

  1. Sex Lives of College Girls.

THIS SHOW IS SO GOOD OMG. Another hit by Mindy Kaling, it follows 4 college girls who become roomies in a college dorm. Again, all 4 are different types of students and people overall, you got the one from an ethnic and strict upbringing, the one who is the first gen, the one whose parents come from wealth and is the 4th generation legacy at the school and the one who comes from a single mom who’s in politics. 3 seasons that cover their freshman-junior year, it feels almost realistic with topics covering failing your first exam, experiencing your first situationship in college, one-night stands, parties, fraternities, side jobs, professor issues and more. Unfortunately we don’t see the girls make it to senior year since the show has since ended, but this is still a more current show with it first premiering in 2021. I’m telling you now, this is the perfect show to watch on a Friday night on HBO.

  1. The Ms. Pat Show

As you can probably start to see, I’m alway in the mood for a good laugh! The Ms. Pat show is a sitcom about a comedian who grew up in the hood so to speak, but now she has a family and is living in the suburbs. It follows the challenges of motherhood, family and trying to become a better self so to speak. It’s funny as hell and is now on Peacock, this is a great show to also watch on a weekday night, it’s the perfect nighttime show.

  1. Forever.

This show took Netflix by storm when it came out last year. It follows Keisha and Justin through their junior and senior year in high school, it’s a teen drama and romance. But not in the corny way. Keisha and Justin falls deeply in love, experiencing the joys and the heart aches that comes with being first loves. Although it came out in 2025 with a new season dropping soon, it's set in 2018-2019, and it does a great job of painting the scene!! The music, the trends, and all just transport me back to my own senior year in high school and freshman year in college, not to mention the challenges that come with teenage love. Been there, done that. I love, love, love watching these episodes on a Saturday night if I’m in the house. It’s cozy, mellow and sets the mood just right, Netflix did their complete thing with this one.

  1. Survival of the thickest.

This Netflix original is just that. Original. Recently turned single Black woman, Mavis Beaumont attempts to rebuild her life after "putting all of her eggs in one man's basket". As a struggling stylist, she is about to face various hurdles ahead as she tries to get herself together. Alongside her friends and relatives, she tries to survive and break through her problems, career and relationship-wise, with her "body-positive attitude. Michelle Buteau, who plays Mavis and is also a writer and the creator of the show is amazing. Unfortunately, it just dropped it’s last and final season (3) on Netflix and each season only has 8 episodes at 30 minutes a piece, on one hand I would warn you to save yourself from the heartbreak you will inevitably have with how quickly you will be done with all 3 seasons. But on the other hand yolo am I right?

Last is a list of classic, classics. The shows that came on a while ago but still hit the spot to this day! I mainly watch these on a nice Saturday morning when I’m coming back from the farmers market, or unloading my shopping trips. But let’s be real, they hit any and every time.

  1. Black-ish

  2. A Different World

  3. Girlfriends

  4. The Parkers

  5. Moesha

  6. All American

  7. Scandal

  8. THE GAME

  9. Half n Half

  10. Young Sheldon

  11. Emily in Paris

(In no particular order!)

Of course I could go on for days. But I don’t want to get too besides myself. For now, I implore you to check out one (or multiple) of the shows I have shared on here because I am always looking for someone to compare notes and talk shit with. So give it a try and come back and let me know in the comments which show you think I did good with sharing!

Love you, mean it!
